Celebrating El Dia de Difuntos and Two Birthdays

On Tuesday, we had the opportunity the share together with our mission friends and ministry partners in celebrating the holiday in Ecuador called El Dia De Difuntos (The Day of the Dead).  This is a very big holiday in Ecuador and most all Latino countries.  It’s a day when families are together, eat a special meal, go to church, and then visit the tombs of their deceased family members.  You can kind of think of it like a Memorial Day in the States but with a lot more tradition.  Their are two very special foods that are prepared on this day; both of which you can see pictured below.  Colada Morada is a special drink that is pepared and GuaGuas de Pan is a special dessert that is made.  The Colada Morada (translated as the purple colada, or oatmeal drink) is a drink made from cooking blackberries, blueberries, cinnamon, cloves, and other fruits and spices with a little oatmeal in the water until thick. The drink is then blended until smooth.  GuaGua is actually a Quechuan word meaning “child” so, as you can see, it’s litterally “children of bread.”  We all enjoyed this very much, including Simeon who tried the Colada Morada.

We also celebrated Josh's and Joel's Birthdays since they are both in November

Isla Corazon

If you read our last blog post you know we visited Isla Corazon (Heart Island) in the Bahia of Caraquez in the west side of Ecuador.  Visiting this island was our best experience yet here in Ecuador and we have had a lot great experiences.  It is basically an island of Mangroves.  Mangroves are the type of tree in which the roots are above ground and you can see them spread out.  We had the opportunity to get a tour of the island taking a canoe trip through the Mangroves.  It was awesome!  Isla Corazon is also the area of the largest population of frigate birds in the western coast of South America.

It was really an awesome experience.  I describe it as going to the zoo and seeing exotic animals, but not actually being at a zoo and it actually being real life.  Some of the highlights were seeing tiny crabs crawl up the Mangrove roots out of the water and looking like giant spiders.  Also, seeing the White Ibis with it’s long beak trying to get the crabs out of their holes with it.  Also, seeing the red-bellied frigates also was really, really neat.

The coolest part of this whole thing was learning about how the island is being maintained.  Basically, the local fishermen in the area have formed an organization for the promotion and sustenance of the Mangroves and the Island.  They don’t really get a lot of government sponsoring; most of the funds come from folks like ourselves that come for a visit.  It’s just so neat to see a grassroots movement like this of people who live off of the land organizing and working in this kind of way to sustain the environment.  If that’s not being good stewards of God’s creation, I don’t know what is.

Here is the website that tells about the island and the organization.  If you are ever in Ecuador, you should definitely visit.

Trip to the COAST!

We had a great time on our recent trip to the Coast of Ecuador.  We started out going to Santo Domingo-about a 3 hour trip from Quito, to the National Pastor’s Retreat for the Covenant.  We stayed at the Covenant campground and had a great time meeting many pastor’s from all over Ecuador.  Simeon as usual was a hit, especially with the other kids.  One sweet little girl wanted to hold him the whole time we were there!  We met a VERY important couple from Sweden-although we weren’t able to get a picture with them!

From Santo Domingo, we traveled to Montecristi and Manta on the coast of Ecuador.  We studied Monday through Friday at a school in Manta and toured the area a little bit.  MonteCristi is where the Panama hat was first made and continues to be made there! Of course we visited the beach-Simeon wasn’t quite sure what to make of sand, but ended up enjoying playing in it!  He and Joel also chased crabs on the beach! Check out of Facebook pages for videos of it!  It’s really funny!

Joel was able to visit El Shaddai Covenant Church in Montecristi and was welcomed warmly!

We left on Saturday and traveled to Bahia where there is an island shaped like a heart.  We traveled through the Mangroves of Isla de Corazon (“Heart Island”) as well as walked through them.  I didn’t find out until after the trip that there are Boa Constrictors there!  YIKES!  A good detail that Joel left out!

We praise the Lord for his safety and protection during our travel and for allowing us this opportunity.  We ask for continued prayes for Kim in studying Spanish.  This last week was a pretty difficult one in this regard.  Please pray that language comes quickly!  Blessing from the Delp’s!

A traveling we will go…

Kim and Simeon in their LIGA jerseys

Simeon’s looking at the stylist cutting his hair-not quite sure what to think

This is the finished product! Smile and all!

Tomorrow (Saturday morning) early, about 7AM, we will be traveling to Santa Domingo for the annual pastor’s retreat in Ecuador at the Covenant Camp.  We will be there Sat-Sunday and then travel to Manta/MonteCristi for a week.  We will be doing a week of studying Spanish on the Coast of Ecuador-hopefully with some beach time added in there!  We are excited about another trip, but please pray for our safety and traveling mercies as well as continued Spanish learning and safety from…BUGS-HA!

The pictures here are from the last week.  One is Kim and Simeon in their new LIGA jersey’s.  LIGA is the professional soccer team here in Quito.  The next picture is of Simeon’s first haircut.  We know he is only 7 months old, but his hair was getting really long!  Don’t worry, we kept a little bit for his scrapbook!

1 Trip Down, 1 To Go

We got back early Sunday evening from our first trip to Cuenca.  We had headed down to the southern city of Cuenca for a couple of reasons.  First of all, our Spanish school here in Quito has a branch in Cuenca where we could continue to study there, following the exact same curriculum.  Secondly, Cuenca is known as the historical and cultural capital of Ecuador.  It has a very rich history and the architecture to back up.  It is one of the declared World Heritages by UNESCO.  We thought that now, being a time in which we are studying and learning about the culture, that we could travel down to it and learn more about the country and the culture.  We spent one week there taking clases.  We also had the opportunity to visit the Incan Ruins in Ingapirca and the cities of Riobamba and Banos.  Here are some pictures for you to enjoy:

One of the many beautiful views from our on our trip.

A church we passed on the way with the Volcano Chimbarazo behind it. Chimbarazo’s peak is the highest point on the earth above sea level (Mt. Everest is higher from the ground).

Downtown Riobamba. We stayed here a night on our way down to Cuenca.

The first time we had ever seen this. A gentleman had these ducks trained to listen for his stick to know which direction to walk. He was walking them all around the city. Amazing!!!

One of the beautiful buildings of Cuenca.

A picture of the New Cathedral in Cuenca, which is also the 3rd largest in South America.

Cuenca is also known for its ceramics. How wonderful!

On the way back, we stopped in to visit the Incan Ruins in Ingapirca.

Simeon liked playing in the tree.

Kim and Simeon on a really, really old building...

We also stopped in the city of Banos on the way home. Banos is so called meaning "Baths" as it is known for it's hot water springs, which Ecuatorianos love to come bath in. Also, it's known for its beautiful waterfalls.

Simeon was very popular at the hot spring pools with his blond hair.

Some of the other waterfalls of Banos.

Simeon made a new friend on our tour of the falls.

Upcoming Travels

You can follow us on this map

We are planning to take a couple of trips around Ecuador over the next 3 weeks.  We leave on Saturday for CUENCA.  We will be dividing the trip up so we don’t have to drive 8-9 hours at a time with a 7 month old.  Our plans are to drive to Riobamba and stay the night.  On Sunday we will drive to Cuenca and stay there for 5 days.  Our Spanish school has a sister school in Cuenca so we will be studying for the week as well as seeing Cuenca.   It is the old capital of Ecuador and is known as the cultural center of Ecuador.  On Friday we will drive to Banos and stay there until Sunday when we drive back to Quito.  Banos is a great touristy type area with hot springs and many things to do.  It will be fun to just hang out there for a couple of days.

The next week we will have Spanish lessons in QUito like normal.  The following Friday we will travel to Santa Domingo for the pastor’s retreat for IPEE for Saturday.  We will then travel to Manta on the coast and stay in Monte Cristi.  We will be doing another week of Spanish lessons on the coast (in the mornings) and then hopefully hanging out on the beach for some of the afternoons!  There are some Covenant ministries and churches we are hoping to visit while we are there.
We are so blessed to have this opportunity to travel while we learn Spanish as well as visit Covenant ministries.
We covet your prayers during our travel as well as for continued prayer for learning Spanish!

IPEE Devotions

We were able to lead devotions this morning at IPEE.  Yes… IN SPANISH!!!  At IPEE (the Evangelical Covenant Church or Ecuador) they have devotions every week.  A time to study the word, pray and fellowship.  We try to attend every week as it is a great way to maintain our relationship with everyone.  Well, this time around it was our turn to lead devotions.  You can imagine how nervous we were to lead something like devotions in Spanish.  But everything seemed to go just fine.  Now, it’s true we ended up just reading a lot of the material that we were given to prepare for it, but still,  it was a pretty good accomplishment for us.

Also, we just wanted to update everyone in the Blog world.  We were able to take  a nice long walk as a family on both Saturday and Monday.  Things seem to have returned to normal as the police are working again and things seem safe now.  We were definitely excited to be outside!!!

Ecuador Update

We thought we would just post another update before going to bed. Not sure if you have seen or heard anything in the news in the States, but we know there is info on news websites (CNN, etc).
We remain inside at this time at the recommendation of the U.S embassy here in Quito as well as fellow friends and missionaries here. We feel safe at this time and just continue to watch the news and email.
We did cancel our Spanish classes for tomorrow. More for our professor so she doesn’t have to make the 1 hour trip up to our place from the South of Quito.
We will continue to keep you updated. For now continue to keep Ecuador, us and our fellow missionaries in your prayers.
Grace and Peace…

Since we were inside all day, we decided to make it a cleaning day...and Simeon helped with a SMILE!

Update from Quito

This face is so precious and such a happy camper!

Just thought we would post a quick update in case you saw Ecuador in the news. We are aware of the situation going on right now. Just thought we would let you all know we are safe and sound as well as the rest of the missionaries here. We are just staying inside today.
Please keep Ecuador in your prayers.
Just so you know, the situation is a little bit over-exaggerated in the news you may see on CNN or on the internet. Really it is just a protest by the police over a cut in their benefits.
Thanks for your prayers!
