Simeon and I (Joel, but it was mainly Simeon) had the unique opportunity to participate in the National Championship for soccer in the USYS (United States Youth Soccer) for the Under 16 division in the Super Group (highest level) with his club team, Roadrunners Soccer Club in Provo and Salt Lake City, Utah.
THEY MADE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE FINALS UNDEFEATED AND LOST IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME IN PENALTIES. Yes, you read that correct. You can actually watch the video footage of the championship game here: U16 Finals.
They played the team that they lost to in the Illinois State Cup final, Ponys Evo FC. It just goes to show how high a level of soccer that is played in Chicagoland for the two same teams that met in the State Cup, then went on to play for the national title as well. We joked that we should have just gone back to Chicago to play the final. In the State Cup final, we lost 1-0, but we played them much better in the National Championship game and could have easily won the game if we would have snuck in one of the several chances that we had.
This was an incredible opportunity for Simeon. We can reflect on how a year ago at this time he was still struggling in the recovery from ACL reconstructive surgery on his left knee and would eventually need a second surgery to get it finally fixed.
Simeon has been playing at a high level for quite some time but this is definitely the high point for his soccer career to date. It was a memorable experience that he and I will never forget. I was blessed just to be a part of it.
Oh and we had the opportunity to see a little bit of Utah and try some new foods while we were there as well. Enjoy the pictures!
