Lack of food security is a serious issue in many parts of the world, and the Central African Republic is one such place. CAR has been labeled by the U.N. as one of the 10 least developed countries in the world. Through CWR’s partnership with FRB (Foods Resource Bank) and CEFA (the Center for Experimentation and Training in Agriculture), located in Gamboula, CAR, individuals and families are being empowered to experiment with innovative approaches to farming that provide stability in farming and the raising of animals. We recently received an update from Roy Danforth, a Covenant missionary who works with CEFA: Continue Reading »

With our partner World Relief, we have been working on establishing a demonstration farm in Haiti, in the Christianville area. This farm will improve Christianville’s capacity to produce food for their nutrition programs benefiting vulnerable children, and to have a venue to train farmers in new agriculture and livestock techniques.

While this project has been successful in many ways, one of the clearest indications that the project going well is the before and after pictures to the right. Continue Reading »

Partners in Transformation” is the new CWR tagline. CWR is blessed with phenomenal partners God is using to bring about the transformation of individuals, families, and communities. In order to strengthen and deepen these partnerships and to monitor CWR funded projects, our director, Dave Husby, tries to visit CWR partners every one to two years.

In September, Dave visited water, agricultural, and education projects with the Kenya Covenant Church. He also visited Jitokeze, a women’s empowerment through agricultural development program in West Pokot. Continue Reading »

Whenever CWR funds new projects, we are excited to see how they will develop and how lives will be changed through them. However, sometimes projects need to be modified in order to make them as successful and transformative as possible.

Below is a description of the evolution of one of our agriculture projects in Kenya. This story comes from Covenant missionaries Pete & Cindy Ekstrands’ blog.

“So what do green peppers and sustainability have to do with each other?  The green house project at the Kitengela Covenant Church is truly a sustainable project as they have successfully moved from crop to crop and now they’re raising green peppers.  Continue Reading »

When “Covenant Cares” was introduced to the Sunday School children of New Gottland Covenant Church, McPherson, KS, they wholeheartedly embraced it, choosing to provide sheep, at $60 each, for families in Kyrgyzstan, the second poorest country in central Asia.

This past spring children brought their donations; one Sunday providing an amazing $152, a substantial portion of which was given by four brothers who earned money soliciting work from their parents and grandparents, even digging into their personal savings to buy sheep for Kyrgyz families.  A total of $361.51 was raised by the Sunday School classes, enough for six sheep!  The congregation was very proud of their children who sacrificially gave to others in the name of Jesus, the Good Shepherd!

This article was written by Rev. Dick Skar, pastor of New Gottland Covenant Church (McPherson, KS) and originally appeared in the newsletter for the Midwest Conference.
