Below is the story of a woman whose life was radically transformed when she was provided with the opportunity by CWR’s partner HCC to escape a life of prostitution.

Gangubai Shinde comes from a middle class family. Her parents forced her to get married at the age of 15 to a person that was double her age. With very little knowledge about married life she started staying with her husband. But her husband started doubting and accusing her of having extra-marital relations. He started beating her. She realized that her life was not secure with her husband, but managed to stay with him for two years. During these two years her husband tortured her and frequently tried to start her on fire. The child she conceived from him was aborted forcefully in the 3rd month of pregnancy.

One day her husband took her to the city without revealing the purpose. They stayed for four days in a small lodge near a place called Budhawar Peth. During his stay in Budhawar Peth, Gangubai’s husband met a brothel owner and sold his wife to be a prostitute. Then he told Gangubai that he had some work in a nearby place and he would come back to her after finishing the work. He never returned. Continue Reading »

The hymn, “This is My Father’s World,” speaks of the beauty of creation and the wisdom of the Creator. Not only does this hymn remind us of God’s constant and gracious care, but its words point to simple truths about how we live and interact with one another in God’s world:

  • This is my Father’s world…God is the Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer of this world.  He created all peoples and gifted us this world in which we live.
  • O let me ne’er forget…It is easy to feel entitled to the things we own in this world—but truthfully we are stewards of this earth and everything we have is God’s.
  • though the wrong seems often so strong…Despite the good creation of God, the world has been corrupted by sin and we are plagued by human suffering and injustice.
  • God is the ruler yet! We have the promise of redemption of the whole world through Jesus Christ. It is our privilege to partner with God in bringing his hope to the world. Continue Reading »

Commercial Sex Work in PuneAsha was living the painful life of a prostitute in Pune, India. After few years, she gave birth to a baby girl.  She cared for her child for many years, but when her daughter turned eight years old, Asha’s living conditions made it impossible to care for her little girl anymore. To make matters worse, the local people had begun commenting on how pretty Asha’s daughter was and how should would make a very good prostitute. Asha also noticed signs of physical abuse on the little girl.

Asha was able to contact HCC and shared her difficulties with the staff.  She gave the child to HCC and requested HCC to care for the little girl.   HCC agreed to help find a better solution for the child’s future, so they took her out of the brothel and cared for her at the Convent of St. Mary in Pune. All expenses related to her care and education were covered by HCC, which provided relief for Asha.

SaraSara Albina Ramos Narváez is a participant in the Fuentes Libres program in Oaxaca, Mexico. She has 6 grown children and has lived in her community her whole life.

She found out about the Fuentes Libres community bank program two years ago and decided she wanted to participate. She has used her micro-loan to pay off her land, buy natural fertilizer, and harvest corn, beans, and gourds. With the income she makes from selling her produce, Sara repays her micro-loan, and she is proud to say that she has never missed a payment! She also puts money into savings every week and uses the rest of her earnings to buy food and other necessities.

She enjoys being a part of the Fuentes Libres program. She especially loves the Bible study, which has helped her in her day-to-day life. She has come to understand that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. She gives thanks to God for allowing her to be part of the group because she has learned to save and manage her money. She is also grateful for the relationships she has formed with other women, as they support one another with family members. She enjoys the community she has found there.

Below is the story of a woman whose life was radically transformed when she was provided with the opportunity by CWR’s partner HCC to escape a life of prostitution.

Renuka is the daughter of Gangubai Shinde. She is 17 years old and in the 12th grade. While Renuka was growing up, her mother was unable to homeschool her and she was also unable to afford the education fees to send her to school. Gangubai shared her concerns with the HCC staff, and HCC decided to help support Renuka’s education.

With the help received from HCC, Renuka was able to begin 12th grade. She also received extra tuition to pay for classes that would prepare her for her final exam. She is awaiting the results from her exam.

In the future, Renuka hopes to take a computer course and to take higher education courses in business. HCC has helped her not just financially for her education, but also by guiding her in her social and moral life with the help of HCC’s female counselors.

Mrs. Gangubai and her daughter are so grateful for HCC’s contribution to their lives.
