CHICAGO, IL (February 19, 2010) – David Husby, director of Covenant World Relief, said its partner, Medical Teams International, still is in “urgent need” of physicians who have experience with developing countries to help in Haiti.

The next team will depart March 3 and return March 24. Especially needed are emergency and general practice physicians, internists, OB/GYN specialists and pediatricians.

Medical Teams International also has available openings for March 20 – April 11, April 7 – April 29, April 24 – May 15, May 12 – June 3, and May 29 – June 20.

Interested volunteers should contact Catherine Hockett by email or by calling 503-624-1000.

Haitians continue to volunteer in whatever way they can despite suffering terrible loss, the organization says.

Nearly $830,000 has been contributed through the Covenant World Relief Haiti Fund as of late today, which is being distributed primarily through World Relief International and Medical Teams International as they have structured teams on the ground providing both medical assistance and supplies of food, water, shelter and medicines.

World Relief International is distributing 10,000 individual meals per day and linking 16 church partners with fixed distribution sites run by other organizations around the capital. Staff members also are assessing how to best meet food security needs for the upcoming planting season, which begins soon and lasts until April.

An estimated 10,000 people have received temporary shelter assistance through World Relief International and local church partners. The organization also plans to significantly increase its distribution of temporary shelters and will begin planning for erection of permanent shelters.
