What’s New at RFIS?

In the past few months there have been lots of little improvements made around the school.  Ron and the guys he works with have been having fun with concrete…

The grass wasn’t growing under the stairways of the Admin Building, so Ron decided to throw down some concrete.

Next he plans to build cubbies under the stairways so when students have to leave their backpacks outside the science lab it won’t look like this…

Grass also was not growing below the roof overhang along the sidewalk.  So the dirt and mud was replaced by concrete!

And so it went all along the walkway from the parking lot to the Domestic Arts Building at the opposite end.

Speaking of the parking lot (yes, we were)… it became evident that the poor little trees trying to grow there needed some extra protection from vehicles — apparently the rocks and saw horses around them were not sufficient protection.  So, you guessed it, more concrete!

And then there are the stairs.  This set of stairs gets you from a classroom in the back of the building up to the sidewalk without having to go the long way around, or walk through the drainage ditch.

I’ve never actually needed to use these steps, but it’s nice to know they’re there!

And then there is a new set of stairs going from the sidewalk by the basketball court down to the garage area.  This one I am thankful for — navigating eroded muddy hillside was a bit scarey at times.

The improvements around school are not all about concrete.  There is also a bit of wood and varnish involved.  One little nook or cranny in the administrative building tended to get filled with boxes of stuff.  So it was decided that space should just be a closet.  So, voila  — a new closet!

And inside the auditorium a new storage room was added.  It’s right where the sound table was — in fact, I thought it was going to be a sound room.  But the sound equipment got moved in front of the new store room, nearer the door.

Musical instruments are going to go inside on these nice new shelves.

So those are some improvements Ron has worked on around the RFIS campus.  Little by little it gets better and better.  And the really big improvement was reconstruction of a section of wall that had broken apart before we even came here in 2010.  Remind me to tell you about that next.
