Ron’s Class Makes a Building!

Ron teaches 4 classes at Rain Forest Int’l School (RFIS). One of them is Advance Construction, which sometimes does mainly woodworking. This semester they get to construct a building — an extension to the school garage.  This weekend saw some big progress.

In previous classes they worked a backhoe to prepare the space.

In class each student took a turn digging into the hill with a backhoe.

Over the weekend they learned to lay concrete! Friday’s last period class was spent leveling the ground.

Students learn how to check if the ground is level
Then they got to work moving dirt, stamping it down and laying the frame for concrete.

Saturday (this AM) they showed up bright and early (for a Saturday, normal time for a school day) to start mixing sand, gravel and cement with water to pour the floor of a portion of the garage addition.

BEFORE: Clean and bright and ready to work

Notice the retaining wall in athe background? They put that in during another class time.

Mixing concrete by hand
Caleb carries concrete a bucket at a time to Mr. Emmanuel, experienced mason, who came to help the students.
Notice the footware some chose today? Anna sports cement shoes for the project.
Level out the concrete – not so easy to get a smooth flat surface.
AFTER: Tired, dirty, and pleased with a job well done!

With the floor done, in Tuesday’s class they get to start laying cement blocks for the wall!
