Mom’s First 5k Fun Run

Last November I was walking around the soccer field, determined to start getting in shape.  Suddenly from behind a friend came jogging, walked with me for a few yards and said, “Let’s run to the next corner.  Wanna run?  Let’s run!”  So we jogged a few yards, and then the full length of the soccer field.  She was so encouraging and suggested I might try running all the way around the 2 soccer fields (500 meters).  “Haha!!” I scoffed, “I’ll never be able to do that!”

After 6 months of jogging and building up distance, I joined a bunch of women in a 5 km fun run!  What an incredible accomplishment!  And in the process I lost several pounds (or kilos, according to our scale here) that had accumulated on me during our year in the US where donuts and convenience foods had taken their toll.

Since the fun run a few of us have kept up jogging for exercise.  Maybe we’ll make 5k fun runs a regular event.  Who knows, with encouragement from the Running Club at school, maybe I”ll even try 10 km next!
