Sports Tournament

The prized trophy is awarded to one of many teams participating in the Sports Tournament a couple weeks ago.

I wanted to tell you about this right away, but I didn’t get a chance until now.  A couple of weeks ago Rain Forest International School (RFIS) sponsored a huge sports tournament.  Athletic Director Jordan Cone (RFIS Grad and former UBAC Hostel resident) said there were at least 200 athletes.  And there were many spectators as well.  It was quite the event; not only for the great sports competition, but it was also an occasion for RFIS to be involved in the community.

As a parent of RFIS students, we are part of the Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF).  At big sports events like this we provide food for lunch and raise money for the RFIS Athletic Dept. at the same time.  We sold 100 cinnamon rolls, a couple hundred hot dog lunches, and other snacks.  In the past 3 years we’ve raised around $800, enough money to build permanent shelter for the senior soccer field.

RFIS Basketball during the Tournament

As athletes on sports teams our kids get to compete against many different teams. Nate was on the basketball team.  Both of our boys have been on Jr Boys Soccer teams in these past 2 years.  They play against the American School (ASOY), a French school, and several Cameroonian teams.  The soccer field at RFIS is probably the 2nd best in the city if not in the whole country.  On Saturday it was Jr and Sr Girls Soccer and Boys Basketball teams who played.

Jr. Girls Soccer teams who competed Saturday. You can tell who is on the RFIS team… look for the bright pink uniforms! (Kind of an exercise in “Where’s Waldo”!

Even as spectators, our RFIS students don’t just watch the games.  They interact with the children of the community.

And every sports tournament (a couple each year) is an opportunity for the Drama Evangelism Team to communicate the Gospel to everyone present.  Several sketches were performed and the Pavilion was FULL of athletes turned “spectators”

All the teams and sports enthusiasts’ attention was aimed not at a game, but at the drama team’s thought provoking and life changing messages.

Praise God with us for this opportunity to love, serve, interact with, and communicate Life in Christ with our local community.  Pray with us that lives will be transformed as a result of these great tournaments at RFIS.
