What’s For Supper?

It was nearly 6 pm and I still didn’t know what to make for supper!  How about fast food?  So I put a pot of rice on to cook and headed next door to the local fish grill.   I sat in her little cafe (right, in picture below) to wait for my order, and watched Miley Cyrus in French!

The local fish grill

The grill is made out of a tire rim with iron mesh on top.

With a cardboard she fans the smokey flavor into the fish (and the wonderful aroma toward our windows)

I don’t know what’s in her secret sauce, but she brushes it on generously, and turns each piece with her bare hands.

Picking up the hot fish from the grill by hand, she stands them up to grill the ends.

What does it cost?  She charges 300 cfa per piece.  That’s about 60 cents in American money.  I had to tell her that my husband refuses to pay what she is asking.  Instead, he insists on paying 500 cfa per piece (about $1.00 U.S.) because it’s just that good.  That put a smile on her face.

And back home, it’s ready to serve with sides of mpondu (Congolese Lingala word for cooked manioc greens), rice, stir fried veggies, and a dab of her “condiments” to dip the fish in.

clockwise: fish, mpondu, rice, fresh veggie mix, "condiments"

  Bon Apetit !
