School to Prison Pipeline Mini-Conference

The growing prison population of young, urban centered males is at epidemic levels. Moreover, the issues of urban education seem to be mounting at an exponential rate: drop out, inadequate classrooms, burned out teachers.  Higher test scores are only part of the solution. Jawanza Kunjufu in the epic book, Countering The Conspiracy To Destroy Black Boys, argues that 3rd and 4th grade are pivotal years for young boys-in particular-in that this is a time that if not educated well encouraged, aided in their development, the life before them is grim (1982, 8-13).

Talking About Health

A Dialogue with Health Professionals and Youth Pastors

The journey through adolescence toward adulthood includes both opportunities and challenges for health. The developing adolescent brain is faced with making decision regarding risky actions or healthy behaviors influenced by their social milieu. Youth ministers and health professionals working with adolescents have a unique opportunity to help teenagers weather life’s challenges through addressing physical, mental, and spiritual health.

Given the influence of youth ministers on adolescent lives and the knowledge of health professionals working with youth, this workshop is designed to create a context for dialogue and lay a foundation for collaborative efforts to strengthen the health of adolescents.

The Feast 2011

June 25-28, 2011 Estes Park, YMCA of the Rockies, CO
We would like to have as many people as possible experience the Feast, a spiritual life experience for the whole intergenerational, multi- ethnic Covenant Family (www.covchurch.org/feast).
Consider this: we invest in things all the time. We invest in the latest technology, education, causes we believe in, relationships, learning and mastering new challenges. As a church we invest in our community, missions, compassion, mercy, and justice. We invest in discipleship by mentoring, teaching, and caring for others. We invest in the spiritual walks of children, youth and adults.

As a church, please consider investing in a child, a youth, a young adult, a couple, a young family or a retiree. Invest in their faith walk and encourage them in their journey by sending them to the Feast. The Feast is a unique opportunity to do life together and experience the best of who God has made us to be… and embody the Kingdom of God!

In an effort to make these gatherings more accessible, we’ve made some adjustments to registration costs; keep reading! Continue Reading »

If you are planning a retreat for the youth you serve or for the youth leaders you work with, then you need to know about the Speaker Team. The Speaker Team grew out of a desire to assist the youth ministries of local Covenant churches by providing quality speakers for conference retreats, leadership training, or gatherings of two or more Covenant churches. Our goal is to challenge and assist the Evangelical Covenant Church to reach, disciple, and equip youth and families for growth toward spiritual maturity and to serve the community and the world for Christ.

Request any of the speakers below by contacting us (youth(at)covchurch.org). Click here to request more information about retreats, workshops, and seminars that are available.

YWC 2011

Weren’t sure you’d hear about it again, were you? Well, if you’d like to see pieces of what you missed if you weren’t able to join us downtown last month, or if you’d like to prove to people that we had Chicago’s Giordano’s Pizza in the Preston Bradley Room at the Chicago Cultural Center with a GORGEOUS dome ceiling…why don’t you check out the photos we’ve loaded for these specific purposes…well, not totally. I like to look at the photos because it was a fantastic weekend and we’re already thinking about what YWC 2012 will look like.

Check it out, the photos on the right sidebar will take you to the “ECC Chicago” flickr account and you’ll even be able to find photos from other events. Enjoy!

YWC is Right Around the Corner!

Can you believe it? Youth Worker Connection is just around the corner. My desk is piled high with goodies, gifts, and I’m filled with great expectations. Last week a few of us went downtown to scope out the venues where we’ll worship and learn together…I cannot express how pumped I am! Chicago-style pizza, the Chicago river, Michigan Avenue, Chicago Cultural Arts Center, University of Chicago’s Gleacher Center, North Park University, iPad giveaways, youth workers from throughout the country, and IT ISN’T TOO LATE TO REGISTER! You won’t want to miss this. See you soon!
