Habakuk 3:17-18 ~ “Missionary’s Lament of Autumn” version ~
Even though the leaves don’t burst with golden hues
nor are there bonfire fumes
Even though there are no pumpkins for sale
And certainly no hay bales
Though there are few crunchy leaves on the ground and
There is not a Starbucks pumpkin spice latte to be found
I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be happy in the God of my Salvation.
Being from WI, I miss the changing of the seasons and I always especially miss this time of year. Back in the Mother Country the Autumn season has a unique crisp smell and feel, as if it invites one to get cozy and savor the change. Graciously, in Quito, “Winter” (as it’s called here) with it’s cloudy skies, chilly evenings and hearty downpours has settled in. I am one of the few in this city that is reveling in the change, it is so FALL-like that I can’t help myself! I’m grateful that though much of what I associate with Fall is not available, I can light candles, put out a seasonal table-runner, simmer some homemade Pumpkin Spice creamer and enjoy the graciousness of God.
On a related note, as it is not sold here, I’m looking forward to making a version of this homemade Pumpkin Spice mix! 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon + 2 teaspoons ground ginger + 2 teaspoons nutmeg + 1 ½ teaspoons ground allspice + 1 1/4 teaspoons ground cloves
Many rich blessings to you and yours! If you happen to be near crunchy fallen leaves, shuffle through them for me!
