A Really Cold Week

I flew to Chicago on January 31st and drove a rented car down to Lafayette, IN. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Evangelical Covenant Church where I preached on Sunday morning and met with church members over lunch. This church supported my parents for many years before transferring their support to us in 1994. In fact someone recalled that when I was born (in 1962) and the word got out to supporting churches, Lafayette took up a special collection in the Sunday school class to help out my folks. So I guess it’s fair to say I’ve been deeply indebted to this church for a very long time!

Sunday night I drove to my sister’s place in Ottowa, IL and spent the night with them, watching the super bowl and enjoying a home cooked Japanese dinner!

Monday I drove back to Chicago and met up with Hydi for the Covenant mid-winter conference at the O’Hare Hyatt. We had a great time there and I only wish we could attend more often. Mid-winter is always such an encouragement. But as the title suggests, it was really cold in Chicago. Several days the high was in the single digits and the wind chill factor dropped it down to something like 15 below! Hydi was going stir crazy in the hotel so we went out for a walk one afternoon. It was easily the most miserable walk we have ever experienced. Hydi’s most memorable comment was, “Jim, don’t you ever let anyone talk you into taking a job in this city!”

Friday Hydi flew back to Colorado while I went on to Belvidere, IL where I had the privilege of preaching and presenting on Sunday the 8th of Feb. I had a great time and got to connect with lots of wonderful people. Belvidere is another church that supported my parents for many years before picking us up. We are so fortunate to have such great partners in ministry.

So, yes it was a cold week. But very heartwarming too!
