Participation

In my years as a worship leader, and in hearing the stories of hundreds of pastors and worship leaders, I understand that most preachers and worship leaders want one thing more than anything else in worship: We want people to participate in worship and experience God. That’s it. Budgets, technology, team talent, nickels, noses and numbers pale. We want to lead and serve an engaged congregation.

Here’s a lovely little article about participation. I hope you enjoy it.

In our years of ministry together, the people of St. Timothy’s and I had grown from needing to understand worship in order to participate in it to needing to participate in worship in order to understand it. The congregation also determined that participation means being actively involved. We learned this together: God taught us when we entered into Christian worship as a mystery and gave God the first word.

DECORAH, IA (November 20, 2008) – Decorah Covenant Church is providing shelter to roughly 20 Palauans who were forced from their homes when a meatpacking plant did not pay workers’ rent and utilities as it promised when they were hired, according to news reports and interim pastor Richard Nystrom.

Hey everyone. We have a chance to preview one of the Connection speakers.

Shane Claiborne spoke on Sunday at Quest Church in Seattle, and Eugene Cho posted pictures and Mp3s on his blog.

So check out the pics and clips, and make your plans to be in Chicago, January 31 – February 2. We’ve invited Shane and the other speakers for general sessions to speak to us on the theme of undone. This relates to our work as artists and worship leaders, because…

It is an interesting thing to come in contact with the divine, for God seems to undo the things we have spent so much time doing. The brilliant thing about that encounter is that after God has undone our work we are empowered to do all of the undone work of the Kingdom.

We’ve added a category on this blog called “Dangerous Worship.” Obviously, I ripped it from the title of Mark Labberton’s book, The Dangerous Act of Worship: Living God’s Call to Justice.

We’ll try to keep you posted on the dangers of worship in the Cov community– news stories and faith stories coming out of congregations who are doing Christ’s work in the world. Likewise, please post your own stories of dangerous worship as comments to any post in the DW category. If you’d like us to post your story as a new thread on this blog (pictures, links, details), just send it to us at: worship.connection@covchurch.org, and we’ll get it up right away.

Here are two stories that just appeared on the Covenant newswire.

Church Doesn’t Have to be Big to Do Big Things

Please post your response and encouragement to these congregations. Anyone from Mosaic or Herndon listening in? We’d love to hear more.
