Celebrating with Cloth

One of my favorite things about Cameroon is that people regularly buy matching cloth for  a variety of reasons.  Sometimes it is specially printed for the celebrations such as for Women’s Day in March each year or Teachers Day in October.

Other times it is just that everyone buys the same cloth and they wear it together to celebrate an occasion.  For example a wedding couple will often chose cloth and then everyone connected with the bride or groom will wear an outfit made from it.  I even bought lengths of cloth for a former student so that all the groomsmen in his wedding could be in matching shirts.

Our school choir uniforms always are made from matching cloth which we buy in quantity downtown since what you can buy this month likely won’t be available next month.

How fun it is to look through the closet and remember the celebrations connected with all my clothes.
