English classes in Kenya

Congolese refugee kids

A part of the program for helping the Congolese refugees at the Kitengela Covenant Church is to teach English to the little kids so that they can enter school.  From 8AM to noon, Mon-Fri there are 2 English classes in the church, each with 18 students.  Class 1 is for 7 & 8 year olds and class 2 has 2 levels:  preschool and 5-6 year olds.  Grace Wanjiku has a diploma in early childhood education and teaches the younger kids.  Augustin Mandaga Isaac, a Congolese refugee having come to Kenya from S Kivu in 2008, teaches the older class.  The students seemed to be eager learners.  As we were guests coming to observe we brought them a treat: a drink and cookies.

To answer a question, yes it is cool in Kenya.  The building is unheated so the kids are dressed to stay warm.
