Getting ag development going

Roy, never one to sit still, has been on the move since our arrival to South Africa.  We plan on spending Dec-Feb each year helping out with ministries at Genesis (Christian non-profit org) alongside our kids.  It is dry season right now in C.A.R., a time of year when Roy is least needed there.

Our kids live on a farm with dear friends, colleagues, and mentors, Lynn & Gary Brackley, and their farm manager, Zweli, and his family.  The Brackleys have given Roy permission to use their land and their truck, and also have agreed that Zweli be the manager/contact person for the agricultural development and outreach that Roy is hoping to establish, utilizing the contacts and programs within Genesis ministries.  Zweli is a believer, a respected person in the community, and is fluent in Zulu, Khosa, and English.  Zulu and Khosa have clicks in them, so it’s going to be interesting listening to us try to learn at least rudimentary language skills.

They are in process of setting up a big nursery, and they need to clear out quite a few trees to give enough sun to the seedlings.  Some days the wind just about knocks you off your feet here, so Roy has arranged for a greenhouse tunnel to be set up.  Our kids have close friends who just happen to be closing down a part of their farm that has many of these tunnels – standing idle!   It should help keep bugs off somewhat, as well as too much sun during some parts of the year.blog-take-down-the-eucs-5 blog-take-down-the-eucs-3We are so thankful to our friends who are helping us in so many ways, it is awesome to be a part of a team.

About danforth

As Covenant missionaries, we are working with all the tribal groups of the Central African Republic (CAR) but are trying to give special attention to the Fulani, a Musxlim, cattle herding, and semi-nomadic people group. We live on an experimental/training farm, near a mission station which has a hospital plus bible and nursing schools. We are establishing relationships with the local people groups through compassion ministries; Roy through agriculture and Aleta through public health and visitation, in order, ultimately, to share the good news of Jesus the Messiah with them. CAR is one of the least developed countries in the world and is currently in continual crisis (since the coup in March 2013), so reaching out in compassion is key to reaching their hearts. Due to the ongoing conflict and resultant ethnic cleansing in CAR, we are crossing the border to interact with our Fulani contacts.
