There we were, Luke Turk, Roy, Heidi Renkema & I, tooling along on the dirt road portion of our trip to Yaounde, Cameroon, last week, when all of a sudden, Luke puts on the brakes and says, “chameleon!” Luke is a life long, how do I put this, appreciator of reptiles. Like Roy, only more so!!! So, he backs the car up and he and Roy search around in the roadside weeds where he had last spotted him. They picked him up, with the intention of carrying him the rest of the way to Yaounde, only another 7 hours mind you, to give to his 2 sons who are in boarding school there.
Now, what to do with the little guy, all those hours that are left??? We popped him into a small backpack, and every once in awhile, he would make his presence known.
He (I don’t know why I assume he’s a he? except that all my life I have close-to-me guys excited about reptiles – my dad and bro, my husband…and they are all of the male persuasion) arrived safe and sound to the delight of Benny & Bobby Turk and some of the other guys at the dorm. The little guy was kind enough to have not messed up the backpack, which is the home of Roy’s travel pillow!
