If you went to CHIC 2006 or 2009, you might remember the organization Feed My Starving Children. Students at CHIC had the opportunity to take part in a service project by packing meals to be sent around the world to malnourished children.

FMSC is a Christian organization dedicated to feeding God’s children, hungry in body and spirit. To date, FMSC has sent over 400,000,000 meals to children in 70 countries around the world. The meals are composed of four ingredients: chicken (actually a vegetarian, chicken-flavored powder), veggies (dehydrated potatoes and carrots), soy, and rice. The recipe was developed by food scientists to give malnourished children the vitamins and minerals they need to grow into healthy children.

In September I started working for Feed My Starving Children as a Mobile Pack Team Leader. FMSC has several permanent locations where anyone can volunteer for a couple of hours to pack meals. They have three loactions in Illinois: Schaumburg, Aurora, and coming soon to Libertyville. Minnesota locations include Coon Rapids, Chanhassen, and Eagan, and there is also a site in Tempe, AZ. If you don’t happen to live by any of these locations, that’s where Mobile Pack comes in. Each year, FMSC leads mobile pack events all over the country. Churches, schools, and businesses host events where anywhere from 100,000 to 5 million meals will be packed over the course of 1-5 days. At an event with 100,00 meals, volunteers pack enough food to feed approximately 300 children every day for a year. The great thing about FMSC is that they don’t just send some meals and then never go back to that location. Through partnerships with many different partner organizations, FMSC continues to send meals and receives updates on the children throughout the years.

Anyone can register to volunteer at Mobile Pack events. If you are looking for a meaningful service opportunity for your youth, consider checking out the schedule for Mobile Pack events, which are hosted all over the country.

Don’t see your state on the list of upcoming events? Consider hosting an event! It is a big undertaking, and does involve a lot of planning and fundraising, but it is a wonderful way to get your whole community involved in something extremely important. If you are interested in talking to someone about hosting, fill out the contact form here.
