Is that a melon or what???

papaya1
They are papayas! The seed came from ECHO in Florida, originally from Thailand. They are sweet and kind of red inside instead of orange. We are harvesting fruit less than a year after planting the seed.

About danforth

As Covenant missionaries, we are working with all the tribal groups of the Central African Republic (CAR) but are trying to give special attention to the Fulani, a Musxlim, cattle herding, and semi-nomadic people group. We live on an experimental/training farm, near a mission station which has a hospital plus bible and nursing schools. We are establishing relationships with the local people groups through compassion ministries; Roy through agriculture and Aleta through public health and visitation, in order, ultimately, to share the good news of Jesus the Messiah with them. CAR is one of the least developed countries in the world and is currently in continual crisis (since the coup in March 2013), so reaching out in compassion is key to reaching their hearts. Due to the ongoing conflict and resultant ethnic cleansing in CAR, we are crossing the border to interact with our Fulani contacts.

These look like some great papayas! Did we get to try them? Now – do the locals like them?

    Hey Gayle,
I think you had sticks from them, like carrot sticks, but I don’t think you had ripe ones. Yes, they are well liked, but the only trees fruiting at this point are in our back yard, so only a few have tried them.

I don’t think I ever saw papaya that were so round. I’ve had papaya that were tinted red or pink inside, and they are delicious. The papayas in the stores here look so sick I haven’t wanted to waste money on them!

I’m glad you were able to have a fun thanksgiving with friends.
