The church member’s home is located near Phoenix, the small community in Plaquemines Parish where Covenanters helped rebuild numerous houses following Hurricane Katrina.
“The church is largely OK with some leaks,” Walter said. Canal Street Covenant is located in the heart of New Orleans and was adopted into the denomination at this year’s Annual Meeting.
The area has sustained some damage but nothing compared to that caused by Katrina, said Brooks, who also is a chaplain with the Louisiana National Guard and is working with them through the crisis.
Michael Gromer, of Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, Kansas, who led Covenant efforts to rebuild Phoenix, said a Plaquemines Parish official told him that homes in the community probably have sustained little damage. But officials won’t be able to determine Isaac’s impact until they are able reach Phoenix, Benny Puckett, who chaired the Committee for Plaquemines Recovery, told Gromer. High winds prevented officials from gaining access to the area.
Helicopters from the Louisiana National Guard and Coast Guard are surveying the region today as well as looking for survivors in hard-hit spots, reports the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
