Sometimes family isn’t biological…

In the short 10 months we have lived in Germany, we have formed some really sweet relationships. One particular relationship stands out to us: the friendship with our neighbors Rolf and Babel. If you receive our newsletters, we have been asking for prayers for Babel who has been fighting esophageal cancer. After four months of fighting, recovering, and then regressing, she passed away on Sunday, June 19; just 5 days after her 70th birthday.

During the last couple of months, Rolf often came to knock on our door and ask us to pray for Babel. This act of seeking us out, asking for prayers and believing that God can intervene; none of this is not typical of mainstream German culture. Throughout this process he would tell us he loved us and we were like family. Rolf and Babel are not church-goers but they do believe in God. And we were privileged to be a physical expression of God’s love to them during a very difficult time.

The Holy Spirit was certainly working in all of our hearts as we prayed together and listened to Rolf share. And even though God chose not to intervene and save Babel’s life, he gave Rolf strength to face her death and continues to give him peace in these difficult days following. We hope we are able to show our dear neighbors the constant reality of God’s love for all his children, even those who walk away. Would you take a moment and pray for Rolf and his family? We thank God that together, we can serve as a bridge here in Germany between those who are lost and hurting and the One savior who can heal and reconcile all people to Himself.
