‘Take-Out Christmas’ Assists Needy Individuals

NAPERVILLE, IL (December 12, 2012) – Naperville Covenant Church held its first “Take-Out Christmas” on Sunday afternoon that included refreshments, live music, projects to help the needy – and a box to bring home containing the names of the individuals supported through their activities.

The “Take-Out” boxes included the recipients’ names so the event’s participants could continue to pray for them specifically.

Attendees decorated Christmas cards to send to residents of Bridge Communities, a local nonprofit that provides transitional housing and other services. Gift cards were purchased for the people who benefit from the organization’s services.

Participants also ripped bedsheets and rolled them into bandages that are sent to medical facilities operated by the Congo Covenant Church. Rip and Roll is a ministry of the Evangelical Covenant Church Department of Women Ministries.

Handcrafted items from WAR Chest, Naperville’s nonprofit storefront operated by Women At Risk International, and products from other nonprofit organizations also were available for purchase.

Donations were accepted to purchase heavy winter coats for low-income Chicago residents who participate in programs through Cornerstone Community Outreach and Leland House. Jesus People USA Covenant Church operates those ministries.

“It’s where we are as a church,” said Shirley Gustafson, coordinator of the event. “We’ve gone through a period of introspection to find out what God is calling us to, and feel like this event is a launching pad to get our eyes outward. We’re so blessed compared to our neighbors. We want to make sure we use that to bless others.”
