DETROIT, MI (May 29, 2012) – Evangelical Covenant Church congregations and related ministries were among numerous organizations that served hundreds of people when they participated in “Lovin’ the D” at Wayne State University on May 19.

Harvey Carey, pastor of Citadel of Faith Covenant Church, preached during the event. The university campus is located across the street from the church.

Covenant Community Care’s (CCC) mobile dental and medical trailers provided free care. Nearly 140 dental visits were recorded, as were more than 100 medical consultations, including 60 during the first two hours, says Bob Hoey, pastor of Hope Community Covenant Church in Detroit.

Covenant Community Care is a ministry sponsored by Covenant churches in the Detroit area and Covenant Ministries of Benevolence of the Evangelical Covenant Church. In addition to the mobile clinics, it operates three permanent sites that provide services to the underserved.

Semmeal Thomas, pastor of City Covenant Church, hosted a prayer/evangelism tent that was busy throughout the day.

The event was sponsored by Everyone a Chance to Hear (EACH), a local project supported by more than 500 faith-based organizations. A food distribution program, clothes closet, and job counseling services were available during the day.

There also was a “Fun Zone” for the children, a basketball tournament, and a variety of Christian speakers and musicians. Among the speakers were Kirsten Haglund, Miss America 2008 and a member of Faith Covenant Church in Farmington Hills, and Bob Tebow, father of quarterback Tim Tebow.
