LA VILLA, TX (September 5, 2008) – Covenant Merge Ministries is seeking volunteers to assist with construction and major repairs of homes belonging to members of Iglesia Evangelica Misionera, the oldest Spanish-speaking congregation in the Evangelical Covenant Church.

Hurricane Dolly destroyed and heavily damaged the residences in July. The hurricane also caused extensive damage to the church building.

Congregational leaders still are evaluating whether to tear down the 55-year-old structure and rebuild or whether it can be repaired, says Dale Lusk, Merge’s executive director. Help will be needed regardless of the decision, he adds.

A team from Oklahoma city has committed to go to La Villa for reconstruction October 25 through November 1. One general contractor, one mason, and various support people have volunteered to go. Anyone interested in joining the group or traveling at another time should call Lusk at 956-458-9568. All housing, ground transportation and food costs will be covered.

“We need more teams to rebuild,” Lusk says.

A little more than $2,000 has been donated to help the rebuilding effort, says Lusk. Anyone wanting to contribute financially can send gifts to Covenant Mission Connection, 5101 N. Francisco Ave., Chicago, IL, 60625. Donors should make the checks payable to the Evangelical Covenant Church and write “La Villa, TX, relief project” on the memo line.
