WASHINGTON, DC (January 11, 2007) – Covenant Pastor Greg Asimakoupoulos wasn’t able to attend his friend’s inauguration last week to a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, but he was able to team with renowned calligrapher Timothy Botts to compose and illustrate a prayer that hangs on the wall of Peter Roskam’s new office.

Prayer“I hope that my words will be a reminder to Peter that his office is holy ground, and that he is being prayed for by countless friends within his district and across the country,” says Asimakoupoulos. “I feel extremely honored that my prayer is hanging in such a prominent place.”

Asimakoupoulos, who used to live in his friend’s Sixth District outside Chicago and was in a small group with Roskam, is now the pastor of Mercer Island (Washington) Covenant Church. The first-term congressman filled the seat of long-time U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde (R-IL).

This isn’t the first time the pastor’s words have adorned Roskam’s office. “When Peter was elected to the Illinois State Senate a few years ago, he asked me to pray at his swearing-in ceremony at the courthouse in Wheaton,” Asimakoupoulos recalls. “That prayer ended up framed and on the wall in his Springfield office.”

Following is the text of the prayer:

Lord, in the shadow of a dome
upon a famous hill,
there is a room where Peter plies
his wisdom, grace and skill.

Within these walls this man we love
retreats to catch his breath,
to welcome guests, confer with staff
and study at his desk.

Within this place, may Peter sense
Your peace when he is stressed;
And Father, may he hear you say,
I’ve chosen you, you’re blessed!
