MANTECA, CA (November 11, 2011) – A memorial service for Covenanter Katy McGehee will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Community Church here.

McGehee, 55, was stabbed to death in her home on October 30. Her 26-year-old son, Dawson, has been charged with first-degree murder. Authorities have not released a motive.

McGehee had been a staunch supporter of abuse victims. She was commissioned in September as a local advocate for the Evangelical Covenant Church’s Advocacy for Victims of Abuse (AVA) ministry during the Pacific Southwest Conference Women Ministries fall retreat in September.

Bud Locke, pastor of Stockton Covenant Church, said after the slaying, “She believed that not only could the church help victims of abuse, but we should.”

Yvonne DeVaughn, director of AVA, will speak as part of the service. Meagan Gillan, executive minister of the Department of Women Ministries, will read Scripture.

Police found McGehee in her home the day after the killing. To read a previous story about the incident, click here.

The family has requested that memorials be made to the Stockton church or AVA.

I think your post could have been written a bit more respectful to the family and not used such brutal words for a memorial announcement. Thom and the kids may read this and if there is a group of us reading it now who found it offensive somewhat. This is a church post, I am suprised at that
