Spiritual journey: Though raised in a lively church, God broke through during my later high school years speaking most clearly through Galatians 2:20. Though I may not be able to clearly identify my conversion, baptism at 17 years of age was a clear pivot point. I have been learning to trust Jesus and put my weight down on him and his word in each area he identifies for spiritual transformation. What a ride!

Call to ministry: Having logged a number of years as a student ministry intern at my home church, I played on a baseball team in South America after my freshman year of college. The purpose of our playing was to use baseball as a venue to share Christ. During that summer of play, the Lord used the experience and the strategic words of mentors to encourage me in a call to ministry. Over the next few years I continued gaining experience in ministry and shifted my focus from post-college baseball to seminary and clarifying my call.

I am passionate about: Students discovering their identity rooted in their calling as God’s beloved, learning to love by finding their home in God’s family, the church, and helping them serve as they experience their lives in alignment with God’s kingdom purpose in the world. I love being outdoors, road biking, surfing, camping. I love my wife and two kids. I love being part of a team taking on a task and adventure beyond any one of us. I’m passionate about launching young leaders, teaching the Bible, investing in adolescents and their families, and wrestling with transitions in the church.

How long have you been involved in ministry? I have been in ministry since 1980. I trained as an intern during college and seminary studies prior to my graduation in 1980. I have served since on the student and family ministry teams at Peninsula Covenant Church in Redwood City, CA; Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village, KS; Rolling Hills Covenant Church in Rolling Hills Estates, CA. I have served as the President of ParenTeen and present ParenTeen Seminars.

What do you think is important that we know about you, as a member of the Speaker Team? I have been investing in students and their families and have been intentional about studying adolescent culture and development, and family systems form more than 30 years. That makes me old, but in collaboration with youth workers, parents, and other caring adults, we can facilitate an environment that counteracts the debilitating loss of social capitol hurting kids today.
