We hope you heard: The ECC is offering a pre-Midwinter Connection event for church leaders who serve in the areas of worship, youth ministry and ministries of compassion/mercy/justice (CMJ). All the participants will gather together for 4 general sessions with speakers and worship, and there will be a special and diverse menu of worship and arts related breakouts throughout the weekend.

Worship Breakouts

Of note, Rollo Dilworth, Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at NPU, will present two breakout sessions plus lead an event worship choir on Sunday evening. To learn more about Rollo Dilworth, read this article on the upcoming NPU Gospel Choir Anniversary Concert.

In addition to Rollo, two other NPU music faculty will present workshops. Many of you remember Helen Hudgens from WC08. She and Reba Praise brought the house down with prelude music in one of our sessions. Helen is a fantastic friend of the Covenant and professor at NPU. She will present a shop on congregational dance.

Rebecca Olather is a voice teacher and an admissions counselor for the NPU School of Music. I became fast friends with Rebecca during WC08, because my own daughter was then a high school senior in the midst of auditions and applications to music schools. Rebecca will teach a vocal master class. More on this later, since Rebecca will need some of you to sign up to sing in class!

Matt Lundgren will bring the CHIC band and serve as worship leader in the general sessions. He will also present a session on the CHIC rep and arrangements, so you can learn the songs, experience the details of the band arrangements and take music home to teach in your church and student ministries.

Don and Martha Johnson will be joined by their designer-friend Jeanne Heckman, and the three of them (mostly Martha and Jeanne) will teach about altar and stage design. Reason being: Martha and Jeanne do this every week at their church. Don comes to this as a senior pastor who empowers artistic leaders to serve and thrive in the church. Don frequently posts pics and descriptions of altar designs on Montecito Cov Church blog spot. Also check out Don’s blog, Jibstay where he sometimes posts about art and aesthetics.

Josef Rasheed has been co-leading Midwinter and Annual Meeting worship with Matt Lundgren. This year he’ll co-lead MW worship with our friend Matt Nightingale. Anyway, Josef will teach a breakout, as well, and as soon as we know the title, we’ll get that posted. Suffice it to say, Josef is one-fine pastor and musician. You won’t want to miss this.

Sandra Van Opstal will teach the Saturday afternoon intensive. Here’s the scoop on that.

Other News

There will be three special sessions of morning and evening prayers in various Christian worship traditions.

For more info visit the Connetion09 webpage. We’re scrambling around to get the full lineup of our breakouts posted on the site. So peruse the site, but check back later as well.

Remember, in addition to worship arts breakouts, there will be youth ministry and CMJ breakouts. Schedules and session speakers are already posted. And… stay tuned to this blog for more information about Connection09– sessions, speakers, breakouts and worship leaders.
