CHICAGO, IL (December 3, 2009) – Covenant World Relief has distributed $2,000 to the Evangelical Covenant Church of Kenya, which is providing assistance to people whose homes and farms were swept away by recent flooding and mudslides.

The church is working in one of eleven camps that have been established by the government and the Red Cross. According to church leaders, some victims may have to remain in the camps for as long as a year.

Heavy rains overwhelmed the region still suffering a prolonged drought that has killed off crops and livestock. Officials fear an outbreak of cholera due to the flooding.

Camp officials have been impressed with the work of the Kenyan denomination and offered them a plot of land to start a local church.
