Services Pending for Two Former Covenant Missionaries

CHICAGO, IL (November 10, 2009) – Services are pending for two former Evangelical Covenant Church missionaries who died recently.

Elenor (Westberg) Peterson, 97, who served in Congo, died Sunday. Grace (Brownlee) Peterson, 81, who served in Japan, died Monday.

Elenor Peterson was born January 2, 1912. She studied at North Park College, North Park Bible Institute, and received her RN license from Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Washington. She served in Congo, working at the Karawa Hospital and Gbado Dispensary between 1940 and 1950.

She left Congo when she married Werner Peterson. Elenor is survived by one sister, Gertrude Habbestad of Spokane.

Grace Peterson was born October 4, 1928. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Seattle Pacific College in Washington and studied mission at North Park College.

She was called by the Covenant to Japan in 1955. She taught English classes, Bible studies, conducted weeknight meetings to begin a new church, and served on the board of directors of the Christian Academy of Japan.

Her husband, Leonard, died in 2008.
