BERLIN, CT (March 17, 2009) – Registration is open for the East Coast Conference pre-CHIC Work & Worship weekend in Berlin to be held May 1-2.

The weekend will include a mix of worship, games, and volunteering in the community. More than 100 people attended a similar event in 2006 tied to that year’s CHIC Gathering. Participants do not need to be attending CHIC in order to participate in the East Coast event.

The weekend will begin with a youth-led worship service at 7 p.m. Friday, May 1. All ages may attend. The evening will include testimonies.

“We’re planning to have student speakers preach on the need of loving and caring for neighbors in need at home and around the world,” says Becky Poor, pastor to youth and families at Bethany Covenant Church in Berlin. “We’re going to take an offering of canned goods for local food banks, and the youth group that brings in the most canned goods will win a cool prize.

“We’d love to have local youth groups help us lead worship through drama, music, dance, sign language or other ideas,” she adds. Anyone interested should contact her by April 15.

Games and other activities will follow worship. This part of the evening is open only to senior high students and counselors.

Following breakfast and prayer on Saturday, groups will volunteer in the community. Activities might include serving at a soup kitchen, assisting a one-day VBS program, visiting the elderly, painting and cleaning, or working at the children’s home. Other possibilities are being explored as well.

The groups will return to Bethany to share experiences and pray before leaving at 3 p.m. Cost is $20 per person, which covers food and work supplies.

“We hope that this event will not only reach out to people in need, but will also bring East Coast students together and will better prepare our hearts to encounter God in amazing ways at CHIC this summer,” Poor says.

Churches interested in attending should email Poor by April 15. Registration forms are available by emailing her.
