CHANTABURY, THAILAND (February 23, 2009) – Attendees to this past week’s retreat for Evangelical Covenant Church (ECC) missionaries to Asia focused on the theme, “Transformational Community Development.”

Praying“An emphasis was placed on the importance of caring for the whole person,” says David Husby, Asia regional coordinator for the Department of World Mission. “We learned about sharing the good news of the kingdom in word and deed from guest speakers as well as from each other. We had many opportunities to worship together, enjoy fellowship, as well as times of prayer for each other.”

Seventy-nine people attended the retreat, which ran Saturday through Thursday.  Guests included Al Tizon, a Covenant pastor from Palmer Seminary and director of the Word and Deed Network, and Shekhar Singh from the Hindustani Covenant in Pune, India. Representing the ECC were President Gary Walter, Director of Staff Ministry Carol Lawson; World Mission Executive Minister Curt Peterson; and Co-directors of Missionary Personnel Baxter and Margie Swenson.

A six-member team from Eagle River Community Church in Alaska traveled to Thailand to care for the missionaries’ children.

“We are very thankful for funds given from ECC churches and individuals, which made the retreat possible,” Husby says.

This was the second retreat for Asia missionaries. The first was held in 2006. For a story on that retreat, click here. To see additional photos from this year’s retreat, click here.
