CHICAGO, IL (February 19, 2009) – Organizers of CHIC 2009 will offer a select group of high school students the opportunity to travel to Thailand prior to the triennial event.

Organizers have arranged the trip to promote the Evangelical Covenant Church’s work in Thailand as well as prepare those students for CHIC’s offering emphasis for the benefit of mission work in the Asian nation.

Students will travel to Thailand in July immediately prior to CHIC, which will be held at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville from July 12-17. The trip will enable the students to share their perspectives at CHIC about the ongoing work in the country.

High school students who have registered for CHIC and would like to apply for this trip must complete the student application and return it by March 13. All applicants must have a Youth Leader Recommendation form completed and returned by the deadline.

CHIC is partnering with Covenant World Relief to fund the trip. The offering – always one of the week’s highpoints – will fund several projects through Covenant World Relief and the Department of World Mission.

“The way that our missionaries conduct businesses in these communities is a testimony of God’s love for his people throughout the world,” says Marti Burger, the Covenant’s director of youth and family ministries.

The partnership with Covenant World Relief has become an integral part of CHIC. In 2006, CHIC attendees packed the aisles of Thompson-Boling Arena and donated more than $100,000 to benefit the children in Sudan. The money funded the construction and operation of a new school, health clinic, and food program. Click here to read more about that effort.

Throughout the week, CHIC participants also packed meals that were distributed to Sudan and around the world through an organization that partnered with World Relief. A total of 1,817 individuals helped pack 2,737 boxes containing 591,192 meals – enough to feed 1,620 children for an entire year. Click here to read a previously published story.

CHIC also is partnering with the ECC Department of World Mission to set up mission trips to be taken after July. Students will travel to Thailand and Laos and see what God is doing with the resources raised by students.
