Memorial Service Saturday for Clifford H. Johnson

ST. LOUIS PARK, MN (November 24, 2008) – A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, November 29, for retired Evangelical Covenant Church pastor Clifford H. Johnson, 75, who died Friday at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.

He and his wife, Alayne, were residing at Covenant Village of Golden Valley at the time of his death.

The memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. at Bloomington Covenant Church, 10150 Xerxes Avenue South, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Born and raised in Duluth, Johnson received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Minnesota. He earned his Master of Divinity degree from North Park Theological Seminary and his Doctor of Ministry degree from New York Theological Seminary.

He completed an internship in Jamestown, New York, and served as a music minister at First Covenant Church in Rockford, Illinois. Over the course of his ministry, Johnson served as pastor of Covenant churches in Rumford, Rhode Island; Bethlehem Covenant Church in Worcester, Massachusetts; Bethesda Covenant in New York City; and Bethesda Covenant in Rockford, Illinois.

While serving in New York, he was director of the United Nations Singers for three years. He also served as a chaplain in the U.S. Army reserves for 22 years, achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Johnson served in a number of leadership positions in the Covenant including a term as president of the Covenant Ministerium. Following his retirement in 1998, he served interim pastorates in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Minnesota.

In addition to his wife of 53 years, survivors include son Greg (Susan) Johnson of Connecticut; daughter Tara Kay Johnson of New York; daughter Valerie (Rollin) Persson of Minnesota, and seven grandchildren.
