RIVER FOREST, IL (September 9, 2008) – The North Park University men’s soccer team won for the first time this season in a dramatic 1-0 overtime victory against No. 12 Dominican on Saturday.

Freshman forward Kristoffer Grahn scored just 51 seconds into overtime. Nathan Ryan provided the assist.

The victory provided a morale boost to the Vikings (1-2), who lost their first two matches in tight contests.

Saturday’s contest could hardly have been closer. Dominican (1-2) outshot North Park 13-8. Viking goalkeeper Joe Cindric recorded three saves, and Stars goalkeeper Piotr Sliwa made one.

North Park captured their second victory when they defeated Illinois College 2-0 in the Vikings’ first home match of the season on Sunday.

Sibastian Pilat put the Vikings on top when he beat a defender at the 29:31 mark and slipped the ball past goalkeeper Kevin Beerman. Isaac Lee put in the insurance goal on a penalty kick that ricocheted off the leg of an Illinois College player with just 4:15 remaining.

The Vikings travel to Mequon, Wisconsin, on Wednesday to take on Concordia University-Wisconsin.

Women’s Soccer Team Improves Record

The North Park women’s soccer team earned a 3-0 win over visiting Marian University Saturday afternoon to notch their first victory of the season and the first for North Park head coach Troy Edwards.

North Park struck early and often as it out-shot the Sabres 18-3. The Vikings took a 1-0 lead eight minutes in to the contest when senior midfielder Amanda Wallden scored on an unassisted shot on the left side from 20 yards out. North Park then made it a 2-0 contest when freshman forward Sarah Hansen tallied a shot off a rebound in the center of the goal. Wallden added her second goal and finished off the scoring at the 14:56 mark of the second half on an assist from senior forward Laura Alfredson on the right side. Freshman goalkeeper Hannah Wilson earned her first win and made four saves.

North Park (1-3) returns to action Friday when the Vikings take on Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, the Vikings had dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Aurora University on a wet, sloppy night. Senior midfielder Christy Johnson scored the Vikings only goal.

Mistakes Plague Vikings in Loss to Carroll

The Vikings fell 55-14 to Carroll University in the season opener.

The Vikings virtually handed the game to the Pioneers, fumbling four times in the first half. The mistakes led to 24 of Carroll’s 37 first-half points. North Park scored a touchdown in the first half when quarterback Shelby Wood connected with Chris Anton on a 41-yard play.

The Vikings second score came in the fourth quarter when Wood hit Sam Cochiaro with a 50-yard pass.

The Pioneers dominated in every significant category. The Pioneers netted 501 total yards to just 197 yards for the Vikings (0-1). The Vikings look to right the ship in their home opener against Rose-Hulman at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Mike Holmgren Athletic Complex.
