SANTA BARBARA, CA (July 7, 2008) – No Evangelical Covenant Churches or facilities have been threatened by wildfires raging through much of California, according to reports.

The Samarkand Covenant Retirement Community has suffered several power outages since the middle of last week, but emergency generators worked well, and no services were interrupted. The fire burning near Santa Barbara remains several miles away. Smoke can been seen but no flames.

No Covenant churches have been threatened by the wildfires, according to the Pacific Southwest Conference.

Roughly 2,800 wildfires – most ignited by lightning – have burned across northern and central California since June 20, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The department estimates 330 remain uncontrolled.

Smoke from the fires is causing residents throughout much of the state to suffer allergy-like symptoms or breathing issues even if the fires are not nearby.
