Memorial Service for Selmer T. Jacobson

DULUTH, MN (June 30, 2008) – A memorial service for retired Evangelical Covenant Church pastor Selmer T. Jacobson was conducted June 23 at First Covenant Church. He died June 21.

He was born on September 15, 1916, in Litchville, North Dakota. He married Anita Baunsgard on September 13, 1946, in Everett, Washington.

He graduated from North Park College (now University) in 1943 with an Associate of Arts Degree. Jacobson originally was ordained in the Evangelical Free Church in 1944, but transferred his ordination to the Covenant in 1952.

He served First Covenant Church in Klamath Falls, Oregon; Community Covenant Church in West Point, California; Hillman Covenant Church in Seattle, Washington; and First Covenant Church in Duluth. Following his retirement in 1981, he served 13 churches as interim pastor in Alaska, Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota. He remained a member of First Covenant in Duluth.

Jacobson served as vice chair and chairperson of the North Pacific Conference from 1956 to 1964, and in various roles in the Northwest Conference and the denomination.

In addition to Anita, survivors include six daughters: Judy Swanberg of Plantation, Florida; Joyce Jacobson of Winona, Minnesota; Dianne Pederson of Duluth, Minnesota; Carol Carlson of Duluth, Minnesota; Eileen Hagenbrock of Cape Coral, Florida; and Connie Jacobson of Bloomington, Minnesota.

Memorials may be directed to the Department of World Mission, the Union Gospel Mission in Duluth, or Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.
