GREEN LAKE, WI (June 23, 2008) – John Notehelfer has agreed to serve as interim executive minister of the Department of Church Growth and Evangelism as part of an anticipated transition plan to replace Gary Walter, the current executive minister who will stand for election Wednesday as the next president of the Evangelical Covenant Church.

NotehelferIf elected, Walter will replace retiring President Glenn Palmberg in September, when Palmberg concludes 10 years of service. Walter was selected by a 27-member nominating committee earlier this year.

Notehelfer, retired superintendent of the Pacific Southwest Conference, most recently served as interim executive minister of the Department of World Mission during the search that eventually recommended Curt Peterson for that role. His new assignment was approved by the Executive Board during its meeting this afternoon.

Notehelfer would assume the interim responsibilities August 15 and continue to serve while a search process is under way – that process is expected to commence with the October Executive Board meeting this fall. It is expected that a candidate will be presented for election at the June 2009 Annual meeting in Portland, Oregon.

The interim will conclude his duties when the new executive minister assumes that office on September 1, 2009.
