BUMBA, CONGO (January 24, 2008) – Delegates to the Congo Covenant Church (CEUM) biennial meeting were scheduled to vote this week to determine who will be the denomination’s president for the next four years.

The meeting began Sunday and runs through Friday. The election was scheduled for today (Thursday).

President Mossai Sanguma is standing for re-election, but the field includes several other candidates, as is the custom. A nominating committee chooses multiple candidates, but nominations also may be made from the floor. Sanguma has served four years.

Attending the meeting are Keith Gustafson, Congo liaison for the Evangelical Covenant Church Department of World Mission, and David Wood, a retired missionary who once served in the African nation.

Nearly 200,000 people attend the 1,539 churches in the CEUM, according to Covenant World Mission.
