TOKYO, JAPAN (July 16, 2007) – No damage has been reported by Evangelical Covenant churches in Japan following an earthquake that rocked parts of the country, killing at least eight and injuring hundreds more, missionary Pauline Carlson wrote in an email today.

The 6.8-rated quake hit Niigata Chuetsu and northern Nagano in the northwestern part of the country this morning. It was followed by an aftershock of the same magnitude, according to news reports.

“There have been a number of aftershocks that have also been pretty strong, so people are pretty scared,” Carlson said. Telephone communication has been hampered, so she is uncertain whether damages might be reported later.

Japan sits atop four tectonic plates and is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries.
