PRINCETON, IL (April 27, 2007) – Old and young alike are celebrating today as one of the most beloved youth workers at the Evangelical Covenant Church of Princeton turns 89 years “young.”

Birthday kidsMary Lou Shaffer (accompanying photo) is surrounded by her admiring kids in the youth group as they join in the festivities. To see another photo of her aboard her motor scooter, see Mary Lou.

Born April 27, 1918, Shaffer has been working with the junior high group for the past two years – she attended her first Youth Workers Connection event just two years ago!

“The kids love her,” says youth pastor Donovan DeGaetano. “They love to hear about what it was like when she was growing up, like the time a group of gypsies offered her uncle a team of horses for her.”

Shaffer considers time with the young people a priority in her life. She shares breakfast every Friday morning at McDonald’s with a group of senior high students before school begins, DeGaetano notes.

Editor’s note: From all of us in the larger Covenant family, “Happy Birthday” Mary Lou!
