OSHKOSH, WI (December 1, 2003)  – North Park’s women’s basketball team won twice this past weekend, defeating Wisconsin Lutheran College 57-46 on Friday on the strength of Shandrel Young’s 17 points and defeating Edgewood College 59-51 on Saturday as Megan Slattery scored 17 points.

By virtue of their two straight wins, coach Jack Surridge’s team was co-champ of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Holiday Classic, along with the host school.

The 4-1 Vikings travel to Decatur, Illinois, on Tuesday night, opening their College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin season with a 7:30 p.m. game at Millikin University. On Thursday, North Park hosts Concordia University in a 7:30 p.m. non-league game and at 2 p.m. Saturday, Surridge’s squad plays a conference home contest against Carthage College.

On Saturday, the NPU men’s basketball team dropped a 90-78 non-league decision at Carroll College last Saturday evening to fall to 2-1 overall.

Lamar Townsend led North Park with 19 points and his 3-point basket helped the Vikings cut the Carroll College lead to 72-71 with 4:30 remaining. A Cal Ecker basket with 3:39 left brought North Park within a point again, 74-73, with 3:39 left, but the Pioneers’ Jason Scheper (22 points) made two lay-ups and outscored coach Rees Johnson’s team 10-1 in the closing moments.

The Vikings have a busy week of non-league games, opening with an away game at 8 p.m. Tuesday against Milwaukee School of Engineering. The men’s team plays a 7:30 p.m. home contest against Judson College on Wednesday and then host Webster College of Missouri at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
