CHICAGO, IL (February 10, 2011) – Two new resources for Lent written by Evangelical Covenant Church ministers have been added to the Ministry Idea Exchange (MIX) resource page.

Dawn Taloyo, associate pastor at Trinity Covenant Church in Salem, Oregon, contributed “A Lenten Journey: The Prayers of Jeremiah.” Each week focuses on one of the prophet’s prayers, and includes suggestions for how it might be a prayer model as well as questions related to the text.

Questions include:

  • Have you ever questioned whether this life of faith and discipleship is worth it? Can you relate to his words of lament? If so, what do you do with those thoughts/feelings?
  • What is Jeremiah experiencing? How has being a spokesperson for God set him apart? Have you ever felt in this position as a follower of Christ?
  • How does he describe God? What is his appeal and basis for demanding help?

“I have long appreciated the prayers of Jeremiah: honest, unedited, raw, bold, and at times quite shocking. I thought it fitting to meditate on his prayers this season and see what they teach us about prayer, calling, and being human,” Taloyo writes in the introduction.

Rick Lindholtz, pastor at Valley Evangelical Covenant Church in Stillman Valley, Illinois, has written “Lord, you have Promised,” a new hymn text set to the tune of Bunessan (“Morning Has Broken” as found in The Covenant Hymnal: Worship Book, numbers 93, 426, and 547).

Verse 2:

Lord, you have promised gladness for grieving
And for the broken, words that bring peace,
Bread for the hungry, help to the homeless
And to the captive, words of release.

Perfect for Ash Wednesday, the text also is good for confession, repentance, times of grief, and for other similar themes.
