CROMWELL, CT (August 29, 2011) – Evangelical Covenant Church congregations throughout the East Coast cancelled services Sunday due to Hurricane Irene.

East Coast Conference Superintendent Howard Burgoyne said churches in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire cancelled services. Youth group meetings and other activities also were cancelled.

There have been no reports of any significant damage to church buildings or any injuries reported so far, Burgoyne said.

According to news reports, more than 2.4 million people were evacuated and three million left without power. Burgoyne said his power was knocked out at 6:45 a.m. Sunday, but had been restored by 7:45 that night.

Although Irene has moved on, flooding along the coast continues to wreak havoc.
