With his laptop computer and a satellite telephone at his side, he\u00a0 dashes off an email. He thanks people in the United States and elsewhere\u00a0 for their prayers that he believes are responsible for the safety of\u00a0 villagers who fled their homes as four bombs struck Gemena in the\u00a0 Democratic Republic of Congo.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div>Within the hour, the report is verified and a news story is published in\u00a0 this online news report of the Evangelical Covenant Church so that\u00a0 Covenanters know of the urgent need of prayer on behalf of the people of\u00a0 Congo.<\/p>\n<div>This is a true account from the online Covenant news report of January\u00a0 1999. There was great unrest in Congo at that time as rebel forces\u00a0 looted and destroyed everything in their path. The Covenant church at\u00a0 large needed to know what was happening \u2013 and needed to respond quickly.\u00a0 The marvel of modern communications made that possible.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0859.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[8304]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8306\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0859-300x210.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0859-300x210.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0859.jpg 516w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I have often stated my belief that the Internet is perhaps the most\u00a0 powerful innovation since the Gutenberg press. It has revolutionized the\u00a0 way in which we communicate and interact with one another. I was\u00a0 reminded of that fact in writing the stories over the past two weeks of\u00a0 the visit by an 11-member Covenant delegation to Congo in commemoration\u00a0 of the death of medical missionary Dr. Paul Carlson in November 1964.\u00a0 Within a very brief span of time, Covenanters worldwide were reading\u00a0 accounts of the delegation&#8217;s daily travels and viewing photographs of\u00a0 the many events, thanks to the marvel of modern Internet\/satellite\u00a0 technology.<\/p>\n<div>It was not always so. In the days when Paul Carlson and his family\u00a0 served the medical station at Wasolo, it was not uncommon for mail\u00a0 bearing the news of the day to require anywhere from three to six weeks\u00a0 to reach individuals working in the dense jungles of Congo. The\u00a0 challenges of communication were more than an inconvenience, as\u00a0 reflected in the story of one Covenant missionary, Eileen Thorpe, who\u00a0 with her husband Dr. Roger Thorpe served as Covenant missionaries at\u00a0 Karawa in 1984 \u2013 Roger as a medical missionary and Eileen as a music\u00a0 teacher at the Ubangi Academy (UBAC).<\/p>\n<div>&#8220;It was in May (1984) that I received a cable urging me to please come\u00a0 home immediately,&#8221; Eileen recalls. &#8220;My mother (Vivian Adell) was very\u00a0 ill and was on life support. The family was telling me that we had to\u00a0 make important decisions. That very same morning I got a flight to\u00a0 Bangui, and upon arrival at Bangui, I immediately went to a telephone\u00a0 and called home. I was told that the funeral had already taken place the\u00a0 day before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>Such were the consequences of communications that took so long to\u00a0 accomplish. It is difficult to appreciate the frustration of those times\u00a0 in an age of instant messaging, where people can chat via Internet &#8211; and\u00a0 satellite signals can reach even the most remote parts of the world \u2013 in\u00a0 real time.<\/p>\n<div>Covenant Communications has come a long way since the first online news\u00a0 reports were posted in April 1998. Not only do Covenanters read about\u00a0 important events quickly, but at times they can join events like the\u00a0 Annual Meeting worship services through the wonder of live broadcasting\u00a0 via Internet. How does all this happen?<\/p>\n<div>The accompanying (top) photo is a wonderful illustration of how various\u00a0 Covenant entities partner to bring the news of the day online to\u00a0 Covenant homes while it is still news. While the delegation was visiting\u00a0 various ministries of the Congo Covenant Church (CEUM), Pete Ekstrand\u00a0 and Keith Gustafson were busy taking photographs and jotting notes to\u00a0 email to me in Chicago, where I wrote the stories and assembled the\u00a0 photo pages and captions. Pete is Africa regional coordinator and Keith\u00a0 is Congo country coordinator for the Department of World Mission and\u00a0 serve as correspondents for our Covenant News Service.<\/p>\n<div>Keith is seated in a lawn chair in one of the Congo villages, with\u00a0 laptop computer and satellite telephone, transmitting photos and notes\u00a0 to Chicago. I have a question or two and fire them back via email, with\u00a0 the needed information returned just as quickly. They are in the middle\u00a0 of the dense jungle, but it doesn&#8217;t matter. We&#8217;re communicating in real\u00a0 time.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0860.jpg\" rel=\"prettyPhoto[8304]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8305\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0860-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0860-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/74\/2011\/06\/0860.jpg 442w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>That is the same way in which much of our news report is generated. At\u00a0 Annual Meetings, different Communications staff members are reporting on\u00a0 meeting activities, taking photographs and writing and editing stories,\u00a0 all connected with one another via Internet. Some stories are posted and\u00a0 being read by Covenanters worldwide minutes after the gavel has recessed\u00a0 a business session. Computers, satellites. Instant. (In the lower photo,\u00a0 I am interviewing one of our Covenant development specialists while\u00a0 traveling in the back of a vehicle on a dirt road in Laos. Stories can\u00a0 be posted from wherever an Internet signal can be acquired.)<\/p>\n<div>I remember participating in the 50th anniversary celebration of the\u00a0 Japan Covenant Church in Tokyo with Donn Engebretson, executive vice\u00a0 president, who preached during the worship service. I had prearranged\u00a0 use of a small upstairs office in that church and had pretested the\u00a0 telephone service to make certain I could obtain an Internet connection.\u00a0 During the service, I wrote much of the news story and took a few\u00a0 digital photographs. Immediately following the benediction, I retreated\u00a0 to the small office where I processed the photos, finished the story and\u00a0 posted the information to the Covenant website. Before Donn had finished\u00a0 shaking hands in the reception line downstairs, Covenanters worldwide\u00a0 had access to the story and photos from that service that was just\u00a0 minutes old.<\/p>\n<div>What does all of this prove? It&#8217;s not technology for technology&#8217;s sake.\u00a0 It sends a message to the church at large that it is a new day \u2013 we are\u00a0 powerfully connected in ways never before possible. Day in and day out\u00a0 pastors and lay people around the Covenant send information and photos\u00a0 to our Covenant newsdesk so that we can write stories and share what God\u00a0 is doing through the ministries of our churches, conferences,\u00a0 institutions, departments and offices in every area.
