{"id":1195,"date":"2009-11-16T17:58:12","date_gmt":"2009-11-16T17:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/?p=1195"},"modified":"2010-12-22T12:47:57","modified_gmt":"2010-12-22T17:47:57","slug":"7399-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/newswire\/2009\/11\/16\/7399-2\/","title":{"rendered":"One Day\u2019s Wages \u2013 One World of Difference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SEATTLE, WA (November 16, 2009) \u2013 A lengthy feature on changes in nonprofit fundraising published in a recent edition of the <em>New York Times<\/em> included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onedayswages.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">One Day\u2019s Wages<\/a> (ODW), an international grassroots project started by Eugene Cho, pastor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlequest.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Quest Covenant Church<\/a>.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nAccording to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/11\/12\/giving\/12CIVIC.html?pagewanted=all\" target=\"_blank\">the <em>Times<\/em> article<\/a>, \u201cNew Fame for the Everyday Donor,\u201d charitable organizations are increasing their efforts to raise money in small amounts from more people. That approach has been essential to ODW, which seeks to help eradicate world poverty by providing grants to partner organizations \u2013 especially smaller ones in developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>ODW is asking people to contribute one day of their annual wages \u2013 about four tenths of one percent \u2013 to the project, which will then give 100 percent of the money to its partners. Funds to pay for administrative costs are being raised separately.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.covchurch.org\/uploads\/Jo\/Hv\/JoHvWSWmyKaDcCEwd3Iwng\/Cho-1.jpg\" alt=\"Cho\" hspace=\"4\" vspace=\"4\" align=\"left\" \/>\u201cIt\u2019s easy to be drawn to the multi-million-dollar donations, but we\u2019re doing ourselves a disservice by not elevating the stories of the working mothers and fathers who also contribute what are significant amounts to them,\u201d Cho told the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Cho came up with idea after observing poverty overseas &#8211; and one moment in particular. While visiting a school in the jungle of Myanmar several years ago, he asked a village elder what it costs to retain teachers, and the man replied about $40 each.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI realized he meant per year,\u201d Cho recalled. \u201cIt hit me: $40 can make a huge difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By focusing on enlisting at least one million donors, ODW also hopes to broaden the message about fighting poverty \u2013 and encourage people to become involved in various ways beyond giving donations.<\/p>\n<p>The project\u2019s website launched October 20. It includes a \u201cwage calculator\u201d where you can plug in the salary you receive hourly, monthly, or yearly, and it will calculate one day\u2019s wage.<\/p>\n<p>Cho laid the groundwork for ODW when he started the Facebook group Fight Global Poverty last year in anticipation of starting the project. He has used a broad range of social media to rapidly grow the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know our vision, but we also understand the importance of the medium of communicating that vision,\u201d he says. \u201cIt&#8217;s a strategy and vision I&#8217;ve been praying and thinking about for over a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<h6>\u201cOne Day&#8217;s Wages is a simple, but accessible concept. I think generosity and kindness are attractive.&#8221;<\/h6>\n<p>The success of the project so far, Cho says, is because, \u201cOne Day&#8217;s Wages is a simple, but accessible concept. I think generosity and kindness are attractive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s so much \u2018bad news\u2019 and one of the core strategies of One Day&#8217;s Wages is that we&#8217;re storytellers,\u201d he adds. \u201cWe want to share beautiful stories of hope, courage, and strength in the midst of the harsh realities of extreme poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The early public commitment of Cho\u2019s family to the project\u00a0 \u2013 he emphasizes it is the family that started ODW \u2013 also has helped attract participants. When he launched the Facebook site, he pledged to donate $1 for every person who joined, up to $100,000. More than 800,000 people joined.<\/p>\n<p>Cho and his wife, Minhee, 40, a graduate student in family and marriage therapy at Seattle Pacific University, did go ahead and pledge $100,000 and recently donated more than $68,000 \u2013 the equivalent of one year\u2019s wages. They hope to fulfill their commitment next year.<\/p>\n<p>Cho is adamant that he doesn\u2019t expect people to make the same commitment.
