{"id":3741,"date":"2018-02-16T10:56:01","date_gmt":"2018-02-16T15:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/?p=3741"},"modified":"2018-02-16T10:56:01","modified_gmt":"2018-02-16T15:56:01","slug":"god-gives-growth-ceum-general-assembly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/2018\/02\/god-gives-growth-ceum-general-assembly\/","title":{"rendered":"It is God who gives the growth &#8211; CEUM General Assembly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201c<em>We all want to take credit for something good, however small our part was<\/em>,\u201d said Josef Rasheed in the third of his six messages to the CEUM Biennial General Assembly in Bumba Jan 14-19.\u00a0 As chaplain for the 6 day meeting Josef spoke on the theme \u201cWe are God\u2019s field.\u201d\u00a0 His text was I Corinthians 3:1-9, esp v 8-9.\u00a0 The subject Tuesday\u00a0 was \u201cGod gives growth to the seed,\u201d an important reminder that while many may have a part, it is God who gives the growth.\u00a0 Josef went on to say \u201c<em>This text challenges our ego.\u00a0 If we are nothing, then who are we?\u00a0 You must know who you are or you will get lost in your work<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 This spoke to me, because yes, we all want to take credit for something good; I want to take credit for good things.\u00a0 But God is the one who gives the growth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Josef-1-800x600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3742\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Josef-1-800x600.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Josef-1-800x600.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Josef-1-800x600-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Josef-1-800x600-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Josef\u2019s other daily themes were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; God created us with a purpose in life given by Him. This is God\u2019s gift.\u00a0 Our seeds need to be planted.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; The seeds must be maintained. God placed us here to assure that his field would be maintained.\u00a0 The assignment way back to Adam and Eve in the garden was to protect and maintain.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; The devil plants weeds.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; The field must produce. Not \u2018can\u2019, but \u2018must.\u201d\u00a0 The field \u2018must\u2019 produce because of who God is.\u00a0 God wants us to live a life of productivity.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; God is coming for the harvest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_3745\" style=\"width: 440px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Keith-Josef-fr-video.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3745\" class=\"wp-image-3745\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Keith-Josef-fr-video-300x169.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Keith-Josef-fr-video-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Keith-Josef-fr-video.png 458w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3745\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keith translating for Josef<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These messages led off each morning of our collective work.\u00a0 The meeting was attended by 215 delegates from the 46 regions of the CEUM.\u00a0 Through the week the business of the CEUM included<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8211; a comprehensive report of activities over the past 2 years<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; the finance report<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; a presentation on a discipleship initiative that Tim &amp; Helen Smith are involved in. The goal is to provide intensive discipleship training to 1,800 people over the next 2 years.<\/li>\n<li>&#8211; departments working on goals for the next 2 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"caption-attachment-3750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">delegate studying the discipleship proposal<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The one subject that was a bit controversial was the proposal from an ad-hoc committee delegated to review the constitution and consider changes.\u00a0 Given the tribal history and dynamics within the CEUM they brought a proposal to have a rotating system of choosing the president.\u00a0 Instead simple nominations and then voting, they proposed that the presidency rotate between three geographical groupings.\u00a0 The nominees for president would come from these groups and thus ideally offer opportunities for leaders of other smaller tribes to be nominated and elected.\u00a0 The term length would also change from 4 years, renewable once, to one 6 year non-renewable term.\u00a0 As this was a change in the constitution it required a 2\/3 vote to move forward to the next biennial meeting.\u00a0 It fell 2 votes short of passage.\u00a0 While there was disappointment people also demonstrate a deep, deep faith in God\u2019s providence and care for the church.\u00a0 Something we all have to learn from in such times.<\/p>\n<p><a also wonderful times of connection between people, some of whom haven\u2019t seen each other for years.\u00a0 We enjoyed seeing many friends and hearing how God is caring for them through all was, well what should I say.\u00a0 To quote another missionary in Brazil, \u201cto say the road was terrible is to say the ocean is damp.\u201d\u00a0 3 days each way for a distance of 320 miles.\u00a0 The second day of our return I drove 16.5 hours and covered about 178 miles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3761\" style=\"width: 435px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a
