{"id":3560,"date":"2017-05-20T04:43:46","date_gmt":"2017-05-20T09:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/?p=3560"},"modified":"2017-05-20T04:43:46","modified_gmt":"2017-05-20T09:43:46","slug":"car-refugees-yearning-become-self-supporting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/2017\/05\/car-refugees-yearning-become-self-supporting\/","title":{"rendered":"CAR refugees yearning to become self-supporting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was very encouraged to hear the refugees from the Central African Republic at the Inke Refugee camp express their strong desire to become self-sufficient in food and to have means to earn an income. \u00a0That is a change from what we heard when we visited one year ago.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3568\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/President-of-Inke-camp-Bofio-Dave-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3568\" class=\"wp-image-3568 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/President-of-Inke-camp-Bofio-Dave-2-300x161.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/President-of-Inke-camp-Bofio-Dave-2-300x161.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/President-of-Inke-camp-Bofio-Dave-2-768x413.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/President-of-Inke-camp-Bofio-Dave-2.jpg 959w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pastor Bofio, the President of the refugee camp, Dave Husby<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first weekend in May Dave Husby, Director of Covenant World Relief, made his first visit to Congo. \u00a0Together with Pastor Bofio (the CEUM&#8217;s leader in initiatives to respond to the refugees) and Marta Klein, we visited the Inke refugee camp. \u00a0The UNHCR chief in nearby Gbado-Lite told us that there over 15,000 registered refugees inside the camp with maybe another 10,000 outside. \u00a0He encouraged the CEUM and CWR to do all they can to help the refugees become more self-sufficient, explaining that the global refugee crisis is really straining the HCR&#8217;s and World Food Program&#8217;s (WFP) resources so starting even next year they are going to have to reduce the food distributions.<\/p>\n<p>After checking in with Congo&#8217;s National Refugee agency and the UNHCR we were welcomed to visit the camp. \u00a0On the way to the camp, 50 kms S of Gbado-Lite, we passed several hand pumps in villages. \u00a0These were the India Mark II hand pump. \u00a0If I remember the story correctly, this pump was developed in India in 1986 by a Swedish engineer working with the Hindustani Covenant Church. \u00a0This simple yet reliable pump is now used in communities around the world. \u00a0Some call it the &#8220;Covenant pump.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"India Mark II hand pump at work\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/216991826?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/sewing-class-4-640x480.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3564\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/sewing-class-4-640x480-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/sewing-class-4-640x480-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/sewing-class-4-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There were over 40 in the sewing class and they only had 3 sewing machines to work on. \u00a0The students also pointed out that even once they learn to sew, what happens next to enable them to sew and earn a living? \u00a0How and where will they get a sewing machine and other needed supplies?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/extracting-peanut-oil-2-640x480.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3563\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/extracting-peanut-oil-2-640x480-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/extracting-peanut-oil-2-640x480-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/extracting-peanut-oil-2-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Those who had learned how to extract the oil from peanuts expressed the same basic issue. \u00a0They only have one mill to grind the peanuts. \u00a0Yes, the oil is good and has an excellent selling price, but they need equipment to do this themselves once the class is over.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/school-for-the-deaf-1-640x480.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-3566\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/school-for-the-deaf-1-640x480-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/school-for-the-deaf-1-640x480-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/05\/school-for-the-deaf-1-640x480.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We were very encouraged to learn of the school for the deaf which was started through the initiative of a fellow deaf refugee. \u00a0About 15 students ranging from early elementary kids to a couple women are in the class where they are learning sign language. \u00a0Excellent.<\/p>\n<p>Following all these visits and a visit to the health center we had a meeting with about 100 leaders of the refugees. \u00a0They expressed their deep desire for becoming self-sufficient. \u00a0We listened and responded by encouraging them to work with the existing refugee camp structure. \u00a0The CEUM will do the same, interacting with the UNHCR and other NGOs involved to select opportunities for involvement. \u00a0We are deeply grateful for CWR&#8217;s passionate and encouraging support of this significant ministry to the refugees.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/ekstrand?moderation_action=report_form&object_type=post&object_id=3560&width=250&height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was very encouraged to hear the refugees from the Central African Republic at the Inke Refugee camp express their strong desire to become self-sufficient in food and to have means to earn an income. \u00a0That is a change from what we heard when we visited one year ago.
