{"id":1885,"date":"2011-10-13T13:12:11","date_gmt":"2011-10-13T18:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/?p=1885"},"modified":"2011-10-13T13:12:11","modified_gmt":"2011-10-13T18:12:11","slug":"mushrooms-in-ecuador","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/2011\/10\/mushrooms-in-ecuador\/","title":{"rendered":"Mushrooms in Ecuador"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Located right next to a volcano, deep in the rainforest of Ecuador is a community called Pacto Sumaco.\u00a0 This community was formed to replace a city that was destroyed by a landslide in 1985; the Evangelical Covenant Church of Ecuador (IPEE) was there to help by building a well, setting up a government system, and bringing electricity to the new community.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1888\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/08\/ecuador-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/08\/ecuador-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2011\/08\/ecuador.jpg 533w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Until recently, the primary product of Pacto Sumaco was a citrus fruit called <em>naranjilla<\/em>, which resembles a small orange.\u00a0 This fruit, however, is not easy, or even safe, to produce.\u00a0 It is very difficult to cultivate in large quantities because it is a very fragile fruit.\u00a0 It is also highly susceptible to pests and fungi, so it requires large amounts of pesticides.\u00a0 These pesticides are toxic to the growers, who often become addicted to the chemicals.\u00a0 Even more complicating is the fact that the <em>naranjilla<\/em><strong> <\/strong>has a short life cycle (only 2-3 years) because it quickly destroys the land on which it grows.\u00a0 Thus, the cultivation of an alternative product in Pacto Sumaco was a great need.\u00a0 With funding from Covenant World Relief, IPEE partnered with La Fundaci\u00f3n Adelanto Communitario de Ecuador (F.A.C.E.) to offer a solution.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The solution has been the production and cultivation of edible mushrooms, which are far easier and safer to grow than the\u00a0<em>naranjilla<\/em>.\u00a0 The mushrooms are safe for the environment and do not require pesticides, which makes them safer for the growers, and safe to eat.<\/p>\n<p>The project, however, is more than just providing a new product to grow. \u00a0F.A.C.E offers two-day workshops for mushroom growers, which focus on both the theory and practice of growing mushrooms.\u00a0 Business students from North Park University took a trip to Pacto Sumaco, during which they helped growers form business plans and models.\u00a0 Equipment, such as refrigerators, a gas burner and gas tank, pressure cooker and steamer, and magnifying glasses, among other materials, was purchased for the workshop to make the cultivation of these mushrooms even safer.<\/p>\n<p>This holistic approach to community development encompasses some of the core values of CWR: partnership, education, and empowering local people to work with and for themselves to create a safer and better community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-report-this\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.covchurch.org\/cwr?moderation_action=report_form&#038;object_type=post&#038;object_id=1885&#038;width=250&#038;height=300\" class=\"thickbox\" title=\"Report This Post\">Report This Post<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Located right next to a volcano, deep in the rainforest of Ecuador is a community called Pacto Sumaco.\u00a0 This community was formed to replace a city that was destroyed by a landslide in 1985; the Evangelical Covenant Church of Ecuador (IPEE) was there to help by building a well, setting up a government system, and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[279],"tags":[124],"class_list":["post-1885","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-community-development","tag-ecuador"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
